Far Cry a été le jeu qui a révolutionné le FPS ; il a été le premier à véritablement exploiter DirectX 9. Il propose au joueur d'incarner un aventurier solitaire aux prises avec des hordes d'ennemis prêts à en découdre. Doté d'un moteur 3D évolué Far Cry impressionne évidemment beaucoup par son aspect graphique.
Imaginez, un ciel parfaitement dégagé, une mer bleu turquoise et l'océan à perte de vue. Au milieu de ce cadre idyllique, une petite île au doux parfum des tropiques, un joli voilier et un couple aussi charmant qu'improbable : une jeune et jolie journaliste aux jambes interminables accompagnée d'un ténébreux aussi bien bâti qu'il est mystérieux. Non, il n'est pas question de vous présenter la prochaine émission révolutionnaire du PAF et le but n'est pas de savoir si 1/ la fille est vierge, 2/ le type est homosexuel, 3/ la mer est infestée de requins. Non ce fantastique tableau n'est autre que l'introduction pas forcément très réussie de Far Cry. Mais ne vous inquiétez pas, une roquette bien placée tirée du rivage ne va pas tarder à remettre les pendules à l'heure : le beau ténébreux est envoyé dans le décor, le bateau mis en pièces et la fille a bien sûr été enlevée... Voilà qui est mieux, non ? Maintenant en tout cas, vous avez vos repères !
Far Cry est sans doute l'un des plus beaux FPS disponibles à l'heure actuelle. Il figure parmi les premiers jeux à exploiter correctement les différents effets visibles ça et là dans le jeu sont un pur bonheur : bump mapping des textures, mouvements et réverbérations de l'eau, effets de fumée, de transparence saisissants, il n'y a vraiment pas grand chose à redire sur l'aboutissement graphique de Far Cry ce qui est d'autant plus remarquable que les développeurs en ont profité pour soigner l'ambiance et le déroulement de la campagne solo. Nous avons déjà dit que le scénario n'est pas le plus original qui soit, mais il fonctionne pourtant très bien et on sort de certaines situations avec la peur au ventre ! Face à tant de qualités, on ne voit pas très bien qui pourrait trouver à redire sur le travail de Crytek / UbiSoft et pourtant une question surgit bien vite : quelle machine pour faire tourner la bête ?
pour faire tourner le jeu sans aucun problème de fluidité avec les détails au maximum en 1024x768, il faut au moins : un Pentium 4, une carte graphique dotée de 256 Mo, 1 Go RAM (Pentium III de 1000 MHz, 512 Mo de RAM suffisent en 800x600). Sans être ce qu'il y a de plus puissant aujourd'hui, une telle machine reste largement au-dessus de la configuration moyenne sur PC et on se demande donc si Crytek n'a pas vu un peu haut. Sachant qu'il se prive déjà des joueurs encore "limités" aux CD-ROM (le jeu n'est disponible qu'en DVD en France), le calcul n'est peut-être pas des plus judicieux. En réalité, la situation est loin d'être aussi catastrophique qu'on aurait pu le craindre.
Far Cry est un produit d'exception et c'est bien évidemment par sa réalisation technique qu'il impressionne en premier lieu. On retiendra tout d'abord le champs de vision proprement faramineux pour un jeu aussi détaillé graphiquement. On retiendra également la possibilité d'agir à très longue distance avec des armes comme le sniper ou le lance-roquettes qui prennent alors une dimension toute particulière. On retiendra aussi et surtout la richesse graphique et le soin plus général apporté au jeu par une équipe de développement visiblement composée de joueurs expérimentés. Le gameplay à mi-chemin entre infiltration et "grosbillisme" s'avère particulièrement efficace, les véhicules nombreux et variés viennent renouveler l'aventure alors que les différents ennemis sont tous plus réussi les uns que les autres. L'intelligence artificielle est à ce titre particulièrement impressionnante et pour la première fois, on a vraiment l'impression d'avoir à faire à des adversaires "réfléchis". De temps en temps on se surprend encore à les trouver particulièrement bêtes mais, dans l'ensemble, les soldats mènent des attaques coordonnées afin d'encercler le joueur, n'hésitent pas à battre en retraite pour se repositionner et utilisent régulièrement le décor pour se protéger. L'ambiance générale n'est pas en reste et les niveaux en "intérieur" sont particulièrement stressants avec la présence de ces mutants très "bondissants". Enfin et ce n'est pas le moins important par les temps qui courent : Far Cry est long et difficile ! Quelque soit votre niveau en matière de FPS vous devriez pouvoir trouver un défi à votre mesure grâce aux cinq niveaux de difficulté et surtout un défi qui vous tienne en haleine largement plus de 20 heures... Chapeau bas !
Mis à part ses exigences matérielles, Far Cry est donc un presque sans faute pour Crytek / UbiSoft. Il est bon de voir que malgré les impératifs commerciaux, certains parviennent encore à nous surprendre. Far Cry est certes un peu léger scénaristiquement parlant et très "tendance" avec sa réalisation graphique exceptionnelle, mais il s'agit surtout d'un jeu particulièrement prenant, pas aussi directif qu'on pourrait le croire et doté d'une ambiance impressionnante qui ne laisse pas le joueur indemne !

The object of the game is to drop the colored balls into the holes located near the four corners of the play area. The ball then rolls into the sloped arena and lays to rest towards the center. If four balls of the same color are touching, they're removed from the game!
As the levels progress, the number of different balls increases making it more difficult to create color groups. With no time penalties you can play the game at your own pace. The controls are very easy to master; this is a most relaxing game for all ages!

The play area is split into 4 corners by a deep groove into which the balls fall and slide towards the center.
